faith and thanks

Thank you, Grandpa, for your sacrifice so I can be free.  I wish I could have met you, but I know that you're smiling down from Heaven, making sure the next boy that walks into my life knows there's a M1911 nearby and it fires just fine.

You instilled me a love for texas hold 'em and good steak.  You left your instinct to always give and rarely receive.  I think I have your humor of putting a fake rubber snake in a golf bag and a fake pistol in an old family-owned grocery store.

Give Grandma a hug for me, and tell her to save me a seat at the UNO table and tell her to make sure I eat all of my veggies.  Thank you for having faith in me that I wouldn't tell my friends that you all had a five-cent per turn slot machine in your house that I lovingly named "almost".  Oh, and thanks for letting me watch James and the Giant Peach in the sun room on full blast while you were watching your shows in the next room.  Thank you for faith of attempting to teach me how to play the piano around Christmas time and thank you for the patience when all I wanted to do was laugh because I couldn't keep up.  Oh, I picked up crocheting again.  Who knew that fifteen years later, I would remember how to make a scarf?

Your granddaughter is proud of you both and I hope I can continue the legacy of sacrifice and love you established.

Be sure to thank a soldier today while you're enjoying the sunshine and barbeque.
